Not giving the player the option to do that in other towns, but giving them the ability to fly back just makes for a time consuming and frustrating experience. Also, I would love to be able to use the canoe without the docks.Īs long as you can heal for free at the farm, players will always fly there to do it. I think the desert area to the north did a great job of not restricting the player as much, so more environments like that would be awesome. In the small beta it feels a bit linear (except for cross roads obviously). Good so far, I like the diversity in biomes. I could beat high level monsters just by poisoning it and then throwing all my creatures under the bus until the enemy eventually died over time. There are a lot of cool things you are adding, like the team synergy, but I rarely get to experience it because of how quickly things die. Similar to above, the combat isn't often long enough for more interesting tactics to take place. I like that type differences seem heavily rewarded. I like that I don't have to worry about PP. Either allowing it earlier or fixing the grindiness would probably help a lot here. I'll talk more about breeding later, but for such a core mechanic to the game, it felt like it came in too late. I think the Body Tackle move is a big culprit here. Unless I overlevel my monsters, there is a good chance that a single random spawn can team kill me because it always attacks first and always one shots even when there isn't a significant level difference between me and them. I think one of the main problems is with how speed works in combat (I presume). I agree with others that it is a bit too grindy. It felt more like exposition than a real person who lives in this world. It felt often that the characters spoke in non-flowing speech and not believable transitions. I think having another writer look at it would be really helpful. Story/Dialogue: I am intrigued by the story, but the dialogue writing could use some work. The bank UI could be improved, it felt like a real hassle to switch items around by having to go through menu items left to right, especially when there is no indicator of where you are selecting. Sometimes the controls setting menu stays overlaid on the game, I think it happens if you unpause while still in that window. Accidentally toggling the party menu in the farm breaks a lot of things Cannot inspect monster in party when in farm view, defaults to selecting first monster in farm. Doing a loop around the kingdom counter clockwise allows you to re-enter the city while the game still thinks you are outside, letting monsters spawn in the city and even in buildings you enter. Hatching eggs with full party often led to the monster being lost to the ether. A lot got addressed in the last patch, great job! It may seem harsh, but it's only because I really want this to be the best it can be. I like where you are going with this game, but I do have some criticisms. This is rare in The Crown Tundra, but we know that May 31st is a guaranteed date when there's Intense Sun - so you can catch yourself a Magby, Magmar or Magmortar in certain areas on that date by manipulating your system clock - or any other date when there's Intense Sun, for that matter.I've played all of the story that exists so far and have been doing a fair bit of breeding afterwards. That means you'll need the weather conditions to be 'Intense Sun'. The key to catching these Pokemon is that due to their fire-type, they're only comfortable in extremely hot weather. All three of the trio can be caught in Sword & Shield's new Crown Tundra area - or you can just catch one of the three and then evolve or breed your way up and down the chain. Essentially, you take a couple of monsters, synthesize them together, and get a whole new monster out of it. The real exciting meat of the game comes from synthesizing monsters. It’s somewhere between Pokémon’s breezy walk in the park and Shin Megami Tensei’s tight and tough difficulty, making for a solid transitional game for those looking to expand their monster RPG horizons. The difficulty balance in The Dark Prince is just right, as it’s not immensely challenging but requires you to make smart choices and keep your team fresh. Crafting a good team with creatures that can fill each role is a pleasant challenge that never stops feeling rewarding. You battle in tournaments against opposing monster tamers and against wild monsters, who can be recruited to your team. It’s completely turn-based – an ever-increasing rarity – though you can easily have your monsters fight for themselves. Those familiar with Dragon Quest will be accustomed to the gameplay. As a huge Dragon Quest fan (who actually first got into the series through the Monsters series on the Game Boy), I was so excited for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince – and for good reason. She must battle Little Death and her factions atop motorcycle chases, a forest mecha, and more. Narrated by the legendary Queen Latifah, the theme of tarot cards enlists the heartbroken main character as The Joker, attempting to bring harmony to the divine arcana of The High Priestess, The Hierophant, and The Empress. Between tight navigation, emphatic attack/defense sequences, and even Asteroid-esque throwbacks, the brief but memorable adventure doesn’t consist of a single second of filler. Level design typically consists of on-rails left-to-right movement, but there are so many curveballs thrown that the player can never truly get used to what Sayonara Wild Hearts will do next. The diversity at hand in the gameplay is hard to get a handle on. If the player messes up, they are instantly thrust back into the action with no loading screen necessary. Thankfully, the hard difficulty isn’t a significant factor in the game’s enjoyability. As a rhythm game savant, I found myself even getting bronze ranks in a few levels. Not only is it easy enough to run through that it’s not outside the realm of casual gamers, but it is tough-as-nails to get gold ranks in several of its 20+ levels. The game isn’t just a looker, it has the perfect difficulty. The mechanics are a breeze, and anyone can pick up and play this game with no acclimation period. Thankfully, the game is just as much fun to play as it is to look at. The environments and art style are so immaculately gorgeous that it’s impossible to absorb in one go. With a neon aesthetic, the colors are divine, but the game goes above and beyond that. Sayonara Wild Hearts is the most visually-pleasing game I have ever played. This turned out to be the right decision. I began with the first level earlier in the week, and was so blown away that I decided to wait until this past weekend to give it my full attention. I was reeled in by a brief trailer that I assumed was entirely made of cutscenes, but, alas, that’s the actual gameplay. It is extremely rare for a game to bring me to tears, but as I begin this review, there are a few in my eyes after wrapping up Sayonara Wild Hearts. |
